US enviro history

[This review appeared in Green Teacher, Issue 50, Winter 1996-97]

For those teaching American History, Sustaining the Future: Activities for Environmental Education in US History (1995) is a rich collection of 20 activities designed to help high school students become aware of themes of sustainable development and environment in US history while simultaneously developing critical thinking skills. Three early overview lessons establish what is meant by sustainable development. Subsequent lessons begin with the early conflicts between English settlers and Native Americans and then address each historical period, concluding with a mock Senate hearing on the environment. The activities are well explained and use a variety of sources. Sustaining the Future is also a good model for history curriculum writers anywhere.
